I always like a good sleep. How about you? I feel good and ready to conquer the world. If I don’t get enough sleep, I’m a bear. I get very irritable and short with everyone. Does that sound like you too? Animal studies have shown that sleep is necessary for survival. One sleep study that was done on rats showed that rats that were deprived of REM sleep only lived about 5 weeks, and rats deprived of all sleep stages live only about 3 weeks. The sleep deprived rats also developed low body temperatures and sores on their tail and paws. These studies suggest that sleep deprivation affects the immune system. (more…)
I always wondered why I need 8-10 hours of sleep per night to feel human, while others say they only need 4-6 hours.It seems like so much of my time is wasted sleeping. But sleep is important for the health of our bodies and minds. It appears that everyone is different as to the amount of sleep that they require to say healthy. (more…)

If your physician wants to evaluate you for the possible diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnea, he/she will send you to a sleep laboratory. You will go to sleep, on your own, during the test. Not too many medical tests are this easy on the patient - totally pain free. (more…)
I have heard many people snore while working the night shift at the hospital. Some snore so……………….loud, I can hear them down the hallway. When they wake up and I confront them with their snoring I get - “Who me? I don’t snore.” (more…)

Glad you could join me for my first posting on my new site about sleep. Being a nightshift nurse for many years, I have seen that sleep is a big problem for many people. My patients stating to me that they can’t sleep. Do I have a sleeping pill that they can take? Others stating that sleeping pills don’t work for them or that they only last for a short period of time. These are people with chronic sleeping problems or also known as insomniacs. (more…)
