How Night Shift Work Affects Sleep and Health of Women

Night Time is Ahead

I can relate to this article. I’ve been working the night shift for over 20 years in the hospital and night shift work can make you sick.

Going to sleep during the day is a difficult problem for many shift workers. It’s just not natural to sleep with the sun shining brightly. But about one in five Americans do it all the time. Women usually get less sleep then men due to family responsibilities - children. Many women have to breakup their sleep during the day in order to pick children up from school or taking care of little ones at home. What sleep they do get is either not enough or disrupted sleep - broken up into a few hours several times a day. This is not the sound sleep that we need. Our bodies need to go through various cycles of sleep (That will be a future article).

Night shift workers in general have been reported to have more accidents, illnesses, and less productivity due to lack of adequate amounts of sleep.

It has been studied and reported that women shift workers suffer from medical problems :

  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Difficulty getting pregnant
  • Premature births
  • Low birth weight babies
  • Higher rates of miscarriages

One study revealed that women who worked nights for over 3 years had a 60% greater risk of getting breast cancer.

Day time sleeping just isn’t normal. It’s going against the laws of mother nature.

There are proven remedies to help with day time sleeping. I will get into them in an other article. So come back again and visit my sight for more good information about sleep.

Good Night to All,
